Colombo Port is expanding its capacity with a plan to have three terminals each having 1,200 m length and facilities to accommodate the berths alongside. After completion of the third stage of the Colombo Port Expansion Project, an additional 7.5 MTEU (million TEUs) capacity would be available. The terminals will be operational by August 2013. The government’s decision to go ahead with four hub ports –– two each on either coast, as spelt out in the national maritime policy – is aimed at boosting container traffic in the country. As per a recent cargo study by Crisil, India will handle around 21 million containers by 2020.
