Cargo handling at Haldia dock declines by 15 per cent

Cargo handling at Haldia dock in Kolkata Port declined about 15 per cent in the current year.

In 2011-12, the dock handled a total of 11 million tonne of cargo. The berths 2 and 8, operated by Haldia Bulk Terminals (HBT), handled 3.8 million tonne in 2010-11. In 2011-12, it rose to 5.5 million tonne, reports suggest. Sources from the Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) feel that performance at the two berths improved after HBT started cargo handling operations as contractors in the past two years. The private sector firm had put into operation big cranes for handling operations. HBT wanted to handle 9 million tonne of cargo in a year at the two berths to make its operations viable, at the rate of 750,000 tonne a month. At present, it handles about 500,000 tonne a month.

Meanwhile, the port management is keeping a contingency plan ready to start loading and unloading operations at the two berths where work is at a standstill, KoPT Chairman, Manish Jain said.
