AAI awards Rs 25 cr contract for Hangars

Airport Authority of India (AAI) has given Rs 25 crore contract to a Vizag-based private firm for building six new hangars for small aircrafts and other facilities in Pune airport.Other works include construction of an independent administrative block for the AAI and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). The project also involves extension of the canopy on the city side of the existing airport terminal building, by another 50 ft. The new facilitiy is being expected to be in place by the end of August 2013. AAI has cleared the project site to facilitate the beginning of the construction activity. Work is expected to begin early next month. The new facilities are part of the second phase of the airport's expansion and modernisation drive and are crucial for creating additional space and better services, especially for non-scheduled small aircraft owned by private companies based in Pune. The airport handles nearly 7,000 passengers every day for the 40-odd flights that operate from Pune. Phase-I of the modernisation drive was launched in August 2008 ahead of the Commonwealth Youth Games, hosted by the city.
