Cochin International Airport invites tenders for 1 MWp Solar PV Power System

Eliza Waghmare

Cochin International Airport (CIAL) has invited an Expression of Interest (EOI) from solar system technology holders to design, install and commission approximately Rs 8 crore 1 MWp capacity solar photovoltaic power system for the terminal building of the airport. This project will be undertaken by CIAL Infrastructure which is a 100 per cent subsidiary of CIAL. This is the first PPP model project in India.

"The tenders have been passed for the pre qualification, wherein the vendors will be given the financial bid. The lowest bidder will be called for further negotiations," CIAL spokesperson informed Projects Info.

The tenders will open on 15th February, 2013 for designing, installating and commissioning the Solar PV Power System. This project is expected to be completed within a span of three months after the award of the contract to the agency has been entrusted by CIAL for the work. Meanwhile, there are many such projects in the pipeline by the CIAL. The airport targets generating nearly 8 MW of solar power by utilising the entire area of the airport and this project of installing 1 MWp is a part of its move to make forays into power sector.

CIAL asserts that "The policy formation for renewable energy in India is not properly developed. In fact, there is a lack of implementation. Only discussions are given more preference rather than project execution. This sector has to be looked into seriously."
