Safety is of paramount importance while using cranes

Tractors India Pvt Ltd (TIL) is planning to patent its 15-tonne multitasking PIXEF crane, as the company claims the equipment to be unique in nature and even if tried cannot be replicated, said Somnath Bhattacharjee, President, Material Handling Solutions and Equipment & Project Solutions Business, TIL, in a tête-à-tête with Projects Info.

Excon offers a huge platform for construction equipment players to showcase their equipment on the global arena. Please elaborate on some of the path-breaking products launched by TIL at Excon?
We launched PIXEF, a first-of-its-kind and versatile hydraulic mobile crane in pick-'n'-carry segment, at the event. PIXEF is a 15-tonne multitasking crane for slew, pick 'n' carry and carry deck applications. This new mobile crane model has a microprocessor controlled safety system designed to keep all the operations safe and hassle free. The microprocessor is fitted with interlocks, which prevent machine misuse and abuse.

What are the unique features this equipment offers?
The crane offers a unique carry-on deck feature with 360 degree non-continuous slew and excellent pick and move capacity, and high all round visibility. It also comes with a standard fitment of a rear view camera. The carry deck has a capacity of four tonne.

The carry deck option allows the customers to use the equipment as a material transport solution up to four tonne payload category at a project site optimising on transportation cost besides decongesting the haul roads at project construction or mining sites. Torque converter power shift transmission, power steering with adjustable steering column and ergonomically positioned and adjustable driver's seat ensure driver comfort, lesser fatigue and higher productivity. These multitasking options high adaptation to application requirement and high safety standard make this piece of equipment versatile and unique in 15 tonne category.

Explain the rationale behind introducing this product as other players also claim similar range for their products?
They must be claiming but we are delivering. TIL is a market leader in India in higher capacity mobile crane and material handling segment. For this product, we have made an extensive research and found that safety is a critical feature and of paramount importance for everyone associated with crane use. However it is not adequate in the currently available cranes in the 15 tonne category in Indian market.

Meanwhile, we have been observing that over a period because of rapid infrastructure growth in India, the demand for smaller range of cranes have been growing but the technology used in these cranes are not sufficient enough to take care the future implications. Many large contractors have started banning such smaller machines, which are riskier while operating. In fact, many accidents occur in pick-'n'- carry crane segment due to the fact that the available cranes up to 15 tonne category are designed and built on tractor chassis causing serious risk of stability during load handling as well as exposing the operators into risk due to lack of safety devices and controls. So these factors have made us to think about a unique product, which we are going to get patented so others will not copy.

From which sectors do you expect more demand for your product?
The product will garner demand from sectors such as construction, mining, shipping, oil refineries, heavy industries and engineering.

Apart from PIXEF, did you launch any other product at Excon?
Besides PIXEF, the other product on TIL launch pad was a portable 200 tph crushing and screening plant in collaboration with ASTEC Aggregate & Mining technology. This mobile crushing and screening solution is a high technology equipment, which is aimed to improve customer's operation, productivity, efficiency and total cost of ownership.

The portable crushing and screening plant is fitted with 38 SBS fixed shaft cone crusher, H2550 jaw crusher and VM2500 vertical shaft impact crusher. Astec technology ensures that the equipment is ideal for heavy duty applications built for longer economic life and it offers best-in-class productivity as well as total cost of ownership.
