NPCIL awaits AERB-Æs nod to Kudankulam reactor vessel

Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) has been expecting clearance from Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) to close the pressure vessel of the first 1,000 MW reactor at Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) next week. So far the KNPP has been moving forward smoothly. Earlier, the NPCIL has filed its reports with AERB and it is expected that sometime next week AERB will be reviewing NPCIL reports. The NPCIL does not expect any problems in getting the clearance to close the pressure vessel, the official said. NPCIL has been setting up the KNPP at Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu Tirunelveli district, around 650 km from Chennai with two Russian-made VVER 1,000 MW reactors. AERB has given its nod to load 163 bundles of enriched uranium fuel in the first reactor at KNPP after the latter complied with all the conditions laid down by the former in its August 10 sanction order.
